Say hello Dahlia the Swiss brown calf! This handmade cow plushie stands about 30 cm tall. It is made in a lifelike style and features many intricate details, such as tiny baby horns, realistic cloven hooves and a detailed muzzle with proper mouth and nostrils. There's even a cute little pink tongue, that can be tucked away inside the mouth. All in all this plushie is made from a whopping 106 handsewn pieces!
This beautifully marked cow plushie was inspired by the Allgäu Brown, also known as Allgäuer Braunvieh. Members of this breed come in many shades of brown, combined with lighter coloration around the muzzle, eyes and lower parts of the body. Bulls are often darker in color. Alma's main body color is a dark shade of reddish brown. she sports markings typical for the breed, along with a black tail tip and dark feet. Alma's head is very rich in details. It features tiny baby horns and a detailed muzzle with proper nostrils. The mouth is slightly open and sports a pink tongue that can be tucked away inside. The feet have been given just as much attention and sport actual cloven hooves and petite dew claws. Every one of these tiny details, and the above mentioned markings, have been sewn by hand.
The Allgäu brown is a hardy breed of alpine cattle, who is native to the southern most region of Germany. It is a small dual purpose breed, which has long been famed for its high quality milk. The milk is unusually rich in protein and fat, making it ideal for cheese making.
This heritage breed was brought back from the brink of extinction, after its original breeding stock was nearly lost. The original Allgäus were sought after to improve on other cattle breeds. The best animals were exported in such great numbers, that there weren't enough pure bred bulls left to sustain the original population. Animals from other local breeds had to be brought in from neighboring Austria and Switzerland to replace them. An outbreak of cattle plague in the Allgäu region further diminished the local population, leading to renewed imports. This sustained cross breeding resultet in the near loss of the original regional types, which have since been gathered under the collective name Braunvieh (Swiss Brown Cattle).
This plushie has been made in an environment free of cigarette smoke and perfume, but not entierly pet free as I have cats.
As with all items in my store, this plushie was originally designed by me and will also be reproduced by me. A lot of effort and care goes into making a lifelike plushie like this. Particularly into the many details of the head and feet, which contain many tiny parts that are notoriously hard to assemble, but also into sewing all the markings.
The body is made from a combination of some of my best faux furs. The furs used for the the body are incredibly realistic and have a flat laid pile with a nap length of up to 10 mm. A simillar, but slightly more fluffy fur has been used for the light areas on the legs and belly. The tail tip is made from high quality mongolian faux fur, with a pile length of up to 90 mm. Horns, nose and feet have been made with synthetic suede, a fabric that is made to resemble brushed leather and has a soft feel to it. Medium length faux fur was used to create the scruff of hair that covers the base of the horns. Minky was used for the furry parts of the snout and upholstery grade velour for the tongue. The plushie has been fitted with plastic safety eyes that measure 14 mm across and are fastened with washers. Imitate leather was used to outline the eyes, improving their shape and making them more lifelike. Siliconized polyester fibers have been used to stuff the body until firm enough to stand properly.
