Say hello to Biene Maja the Pinzgauer calf!
This handmade cow plushie stands about 28 cm tall an is very rich in details. Biene Maja's head for example features a detailed muzzle with proper nostrils. The mouth is slightly open and sports a pink tongue that can be tucked away inside. The feet have been given just as much attention and sport actual cloven hooves and petite dew claws. Every one of these tiny details, and the above seen markings, have been sewn by hand. All in all this plushie is made from a whopping 114 handsewn pieces! Biene Maja is a semi-posable calf, meaning that she is able to alter between basic standing and sitting positions.
This beautifuly marked Pinzgauer calf will be remade upon order. As with all items in my store, this lifelike plushie was originally designed by me and will also be reproduced by me. Making a calf plushie like this usually takes me 2-3 weeks, but I may need longer, depending on how busy I am at the time of order. Once finished the plushie will be shipped within a few workdays.
Pinzgauer is a horned breed of alpine cattle, that originates from the Pinzgau valley in Austria. Pinzgauer cattle have a "finched" color pattern, meaning that the head, neck, flanks and lower legs are pigmented, while the rest of the body (including the udder) is white. Red and white is the most common color. Black and white individuals have occured throughout the entire history of this breed, and they were often kept for good luck. They've never been common though, and selective breeding, along with dwindling numbers of pure bred Pinzgauers has made them very rare. True to her heritage, Biene Maja sports the chestnut brown color most commonly seen with this breed, along with the finched markings.
Before the Pinzgauer was established as an official breed, it was known under many local names, such as Pongauer, Brixentaler and Salzburger Schecken to name a few. The original Pinzgauer was developed as a triple-purpose breed. Draught oxen were highly priced as working animals and the Pinzgauer stock was well known for its strength, good health and docile temperament. In addition to that, the animals also provided an important source of meat and milk. As machinery replaced the working animals, demand for traditional all-purpose breeds like the Pinzgauer plummeted. Increased milk-production became a priority and changes were made to the Austrian breeding program. This change would have devastating consequences for the original breed, as many purebred Pinzgauers didn't conform with the desired build and coloration, and therefore were excluded from the program. Meanwhile red Holstein steers were added to the breeding stock to produce offspring that would produce more milk. This approach (along with losses through disease and increased competition from other dual-purpose breeds) led to a sharp decrease in purebred Pinzgauers. Their numbers have been dwindling ever since and the breed is listed as endangered. It can still be found in pockets around the world, where it is often kept for its excellent quality meat.
This plushie will be made in an environment free of cigarette smoke and perfume, but not entierly pet free as I have cats.
The body will be made from two shades of super soft rabbit style fur with a pile length of about 7 mm. The tail tip will be made of high quality mongolian faux fur with a pile length of roughly 70 mm. Synthetic suede, a fabric that is made to resemble brushed leather and has a soft feel to it, will be used for the nose and feet. The furry parts of the muzzle will be made from minky and upholstery grade velour will be used for the tongue. The plushie will be fitted with 14 mm plastic safety eyes, lined with black imitate leather. The extra lining improve the eyeshape and make them look more lifelike. The legs will be sealed off from the rest of the body, allowing them to be stuffed firmly enough to carry the weight of the the plushie, and the rest of the body to be stuffed much more lightly. Plastic beads will be added to the tail and feet.
This plushie is best used as an ornamental piece for indoors decoration purposes. It is not suitable as a toy and should be kept away from young children and pets at all times. It can be used for play with older children if handled gently. Keep in mind though, that this is an artist doll. It is a work of art and not a toy. The plushie can't be washed if it gets dirty and may easily get damaged.
